How did you get your start in drawing?

I used to watch my Dad draw a lot at night after dinner. I would try to draw the same thing he was drawing and he would critique them for me. I would get mad and give up, but he told me if I listened to what he was saying and try again, then I would get better and better.

I'm glad he pushed me to stick with it.

What school did you attend to learn how to draw?

I didn't go to some art college. I am self taught. I was determined to draw as good as the artists I used to read in Marvel Comics like Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, John Romita, John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, and Frank Miller. I took every chance I could get to draw something every day.

Can you teach me how to draw?

I've actually been asked this many times over the years, even as far back as elementary school. I have no idea how to teach someone to draw. I didn't have a teacher to show me anything. My Dad critiqued my art for me and showed me how to look at things in a different way. He taught me about perspective drawing and about how to keep your subject from looking so flat and boring. I can advise you to pick up the same book I did as a kid, yes, it's still in print,'s called HOW TO DRAW COMICS THE MARVEL WAY By Stan Lee and John Buscema. Lots of great and useful information in that book and a lot of the info can be applied towards other types of drawing as well. No matter what you do in life, you'll never get better at something if you don't keep practicing at it. If you want to play guitar, then play every chance you get, if you want to be a baseball player, then play baseball every chance you get, BUT if you want to DRAW, then DRAW EVERY CHANCE YOU GET.

What tools do you use?

I like to draw on Bristol Board. I use mechanical pencils with a 2B or 3B hardness to draw with. Sometimes I do roughout sketches with a Process Blue pencil by Berol. I also use Faber-Castell Pitt Fine Nib and Brush Artist Pens for my detail work. I use Copic, Sanford and Sharpie large tipped markers for the bigger fills. I use Prismacolor Coloring Pencils and sometimes use Photoshop for airbrushing and spot- coloring some of my drawings.
